Holding space…I would have to say that this is one of the subjects that come up most often during both my group and individual sessions with clients. What does this mean exactly?
Holding space is the mindful practice of compassion without taking responsibility for the outcome.
This isn’t complicated to understand but it is a concept that must be practiced to reap full benefits. The ONLY person you are truly responsible for is YOU! We can love and help others, but we may also be weighing ourselves down by feeling obligated to “Fix”, “Rescue”, or “Save”. By taking responsibility for, or being attached to, the end result or outcome of any given situation, we are not only enabling the other people involved, we are draining our own life force and stunting our own joy and growth.
